Hamas Engages in Talks on Gaza Ceasefire Proposals
The Palestinian militant group emphasized in a statement that it is "acting with a high sense of responsibility" while consulting on the mediators' suggestions. Their goal, they stated, is to reach an agreement that ensures the cessation of Israeli aggression, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
"The mediators are making intensive efforts to bridge the gap between the parties, reach a framework agreement, and begin a new round of serious negotiations," the statement added.
In related developments, U.S. President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, revealed that Israel had agreed to a 60-day ceasefire and urged Hamas to accept the terms.
"I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better -- IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE," Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.
Despite multiple rounds of indirect talks between Hamas and Israel over recent months, no conclusive ceasefire deal has been finalized. Previous negotiations have seen Hamas call for an unconditional end to the war, while Israel has pushed for a temporary halt to hostilities.
Israel renewed its military operations in Gaza on March 18, marking the end of a two-month ceasefire. According to Gaza's health authorities, the conflict has taken a devastating toll, with at least 6,454 Palestinians killed and 22,551 more wounded since the resumption of fighting.
The total Palestinian death toll since the outbreak of the war in October 2023 now stands at 57,012, with 134,592 others injured, the health authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
